Before Anesthesia

Before Nitrous Oxide/Local Anesthesia

You do not need to worry about not eating or drinking, however, a light meal only is recommended.  Please inform us if you have emphysema, a pneumothorax, inner ear infection, or recent brain surgery or head trauma.

Before Intravenous Anesthesia (Sedation and General Anesthesia)

  • You may not have anything to eat or drink (including water) for eight (8) hours prior to the appointment.

  • A responsible adult must accompany the patient to the office, remain in the office during the procedure, and drive the patient home.

  • If the doctor gave a prescription for antiobiotics prior to procedure, please follow the directions written on the bottle.

  • It is ideal to cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery.

  • The patient should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 12 hours following the anesthesia experience.  This may be longer if the patient is taking narcotic pain medications.

  • Please wear loose fitting clothing with sleeves which can be rolled up past the elbow, preferably a short sleeved shirt or tank top.

  • Teeth should be brushed prior to surgery.

  • Try to avoid lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery.

  • If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, stomach or bowel upset, please notify the office.

If you take routine oral medications, please check with Dr. Ditty or Dr. Pancko prior to your surgical date for instructions.
